{"id":15047,"date":"2023-10-17T10:48:17","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T10:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/india-are-the-team-to-beat-says-ponting\/"},"modified":"2023-10-17T10:48:17","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T10:48:17","slug":"india-are-the-team-to-beat-says-ponting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/india-are-the-team-to-beat-says-ponting\/","title":{"rendered":"India are the team to beat, says Ponting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Former Australian skipper, Ricky Ponting, stated that India are the team to beat in this World Cup, saying that the home side has all the \u201cbases covered\u201d but it is yet to be seen how they will cope under \u201cextreme pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian side has won three games in as many matches as they defeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779993\">Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1780513\">Afghanistan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781048\">arch-rivals<\/a> Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Ponting comments come after concerns were raised over the hosts\u2019 performance along with the extra pressure that comes with playing in front of \u201cfervent fans\u201d, but the Indian team dismissed all doubts and has comprehensively won all three of their games.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1779365\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI said from the start that I think they\u2019re going to be the team to beat. They\u2019ve got a very talented team,\u201d Ponting said in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cricket.com\/news\/3739927\">remarks<\/a> published by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time World Cup winner stated that the Indian team has a complete side with their fast bowling, their spin and their top-order, middle-order batting and would be extremely hard to beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve got all bases covered with their fast bowling, their spin and their top-order, middle-order batting \u2026 They\u2019re going to be extremely hard to beat. But we\u2019ll see how they hold up under extreme pressure as well,\u201d Ponting said.<\/p>\n<p>He lauded Rohit Sharma as an \u201cideal captain\u201d to lead the Indian side as the Blue team looks to chase the World Cup title on home soil.<\/p>\n<p>According to the two-time World Cup-winning captain, Sharma is the key to India rising to the occasion even while surrounded by passionate home support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s very laid back, Rohit. Very laid back with everything he does,\u201d Ponting stated while speaking to the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can even see that by the way that he plays. He\u2019s a pretty laconic sort of batsman as well, and that\u2019s the way he is both on and off the field,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian skipper stated that the pressure will get to the Indian players because of the enormity of the tournament, however, the Indian skipper can take the pressure and cope with it as well as anyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t sit back and say that the pressure won\u2019t get to them at some stage, or it won\u2019t affect them, because it will, just with the enormity of the tournament. But he\u2019ll take it and cope with it as well as probably anyone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1781123\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ponting added that Sharma is a more secure captain than the former Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, who according to the Australian would find it a bit harder because of his ability to wear his \u201cheart-on-the-sleeve\u201d when he walks out.<\/p>\n<p>Sharma took the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1662650\">reigns<\/a> of captaincy for the ODIs from Virat Kohli in 2021 after the once-in-a-generation-batter had struggled to get his side over the line in repeated ICC events.<\/p>\n<p>He also added that it would be better for Kohli to focus on his \u201cstarring role with the bat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone like Virat, who is a bit more heart-on-the-sleeve, and probably listens to the fans and plays up with the fans a little bit more, someone with his personality would probably find it a bit harder,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Sharma has done a great job as a leader for the Indian side and would be a better option as he is able to cope with pressure differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think Rohit will be fine with it.
