{"id":14149,"date":"2023-10-14T13:55:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-14T13:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/human-rights-minister-backs-pm-kakars-statement-on-50-missing-persons-from-balochistan\/"},"modified":"2023-10-14T13:55:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-14T13:55:07","slug":"human-rights-minister-backs-pm-kakars-statement-on-50-missing-persons-from-balochistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/human-rights-minister-backs-pm-kakars-statement-on-50-missing-persons-from-balochistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Human rights minister backs PM Kakar\u2019s statement on 50 missing persons from Balochistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Caretaker Human Rights Minister Khalil George has backed Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1778684#:~:text=for%20the%20executive.%E2%80%9D-,Missing,-persons\">claim<\/a> that around 50 people have been forcefully disappeared in Balochistan.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on <em>Dawn News<\/em>\u2019 programme \u2018<em>Doosra Rukh<\/em>\u2019, when asked if he thought that the number of missing persons was \u201cnot as many as reported\u201d but 50 as stated by PM Kakar, George replied: \u201cMy opinion cannot be different from the prime minister\u2019s because we are part of the cabinet and the prime minister would have more knowledge on this than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1779781\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhat he would have said, that would definitely be the case,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, in an interview with <em>BBC News<\/em>, the interim premier had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1778684#:~:text=for%20the%20executive.%E2%80%9D-,Missing,-persons\">claimed<\/a> that according to a UN sub-committee\u2019s estimates, around 50 people have been forcefully disappeared in Balochistan.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he had data regarding the number of missing persons across the country, George recalled that a commission had been formed to look into the matter and that a \u201cparty leader\u201d from Balochistan was also part of it.<\/p>\n<p>The Parliamentary Commission on Missing Persons was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1729159\/balochistan-commission-on-missing-persons-set-up\">established<\/a> by the Balochistan government in December last year to review each case of missing persons and play a role in their recovery.<\/p>\n<p>George went on to state that he did not have a \u201ccorrect figure\u201d but the matter was being looked into, noting that he hailed from Balochistan and the matter was a \u201csensitive\u201d one.<\/p>\n<p>The minister added that the issue had been raised for a long time \u2014 prior to when he assumed his role in the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, on this\u2026 I have not sought a briefing as such to this extent that we are able to provide you with great detail on this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Answering whether he was satisfied with the commission\u2019s performance, George said it had only been two months since his appointment and did not know what the commission had achieved yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not received any such report since I have assumed the office. If there was any before I came, I do not know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When inquired whether he thought he should have data on the \u201csensitive matter\u201d, he said, \u201cThe data must have been present before me [assuming the role] but no such report has been released before this during my time in office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The human rights minister also responded to a query about journalist Mudassir Naru, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1575509\">went missing<\/a> in 2020 while on a trip to the northern areas and regarding whom a case is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1663551\">pending<\/a> before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).<\/p>\n<p>George said he did not know about Naaru\u2019s whereabouts and then went on to emphasise that the caretaker government\u2019s \u201cduty is to oversee the [general] elections\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want that the democratic governments formed\u2026 their ministers come. Actually, they are the ones who can legislate on this. Our authority is to conduct elections and supervise them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A day ago, the Peshawar High Court directed the federal and provincial governments to file replies in all the cases of \u201cmissing persons\u201d and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1780919\">inform the court<\/a> as to who among them was in the custody of any of the law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1779536\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier this month, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779536\">court felt \u201cembarrassed\u201d<\/a> that the issue had been lingering for several years.<\/p>\n<p>The division bench comprising Justice Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb had noted that the cases of enforced disappearances were stigmatising the image of Pakistan and bringing the country into disrepute.<\/p>\n<p>The IHC sought the assistance of the attorney general for Pakistan to resolve the long-standing issue, suggesting that he may hold a meeting with the caretaker prime minister on the issue.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caretaker Human Rights Minister Khalil George has backed Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar\u2019s claim that around 50 people have been forcefully disappeared in Balochistan.
