reported<\/a> that Nepalese Ama\u00adzon workers in Saudi Arabia had suffered \u201cappalling\u201d living conditions, on-the-job safety risks and wage theft.<\/p>\n\u201cAny form of labour abuse or exp\u00adloitation is unacceptable and is comprehensively investigated by the re\u00adlevant Saudi authorities,\u201d the sta\u00adt\u00ad\u00adement said. \u201cThe distressing rep\u00adorts outlined in this case are already the subject of an ongoing investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Amnesty report published on Tuesday drew from the accounts of 22 men who had worked in warehouses in Riyadh or Jeddah going back to 2021. The group accused recruitment agents and two Saudi labour supply companies of deceiving workers who thought they wou\u00adld be employed directly by Amazon.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival in Saudi Arabia they encountered \u201cdirty and overcrowded accommodation, sometimes infested with bed bugs\u201d as well as \u201cgruelling\u201d working conditions marked by constant monitoring and inadequate rest, sometimes resulting in injury, Amnesty said.<\/p>\n
Thursday\u2019s statement said Saudi authorities had \u201ctaken robust measures to combat any form of human trafficking on an international level\u201d, including by ratifying the International Labour Organisation protocol against forced labour.<\/p>\n
The kingdom \u201chas also put in place comprehensive legislation and policies to prevent, investigate, and prosecute trafficking offences\u201d, the statement said, noting that recruitment agents and private employers \u201cmust adhere to clear and strongly enforced laws to ensure the fair treatment and welfare of all employees\u201d.<\/p>\n
