The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday directed the lawyer representing Noreen Niazi, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, to file a separate application seeking medical treatment and permission for her family to meet her, following her recent hospitalisation while in preventive detention.<\/p>\n

The judge, however, directed him to also bring the matter before the court through a separate civil miscellaneous application.<\/p>\n During the hearing, Umer questioned the legal basis for extending the detention of the two women, arguing that the latest detention orders were virtually identical to the previous ones, with only their dates changed.<\/p>\n He maintained that there was no justification for keeping the sisters in custody and argued that suspending the fresh detention notifications would result in their release.<\/p>\n Also Read: <\/strong>Sana assures family access to Noreen<\/a><\/p>\n Referring to Noreen’s hospitalisation, Umer said she had no previous history of heart disease and questioned the circumstances that had led to her being taken to hospital while in detention.<\/p>\n PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja also appeared before the court and raised concerns about Noreen’s medical condition.<\/p>\n He told the judge that she was unwell and had reportedly been shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU), but neither her relatives nor her legal representative had been allowed to see her.<\/p>\n Raja further said he had no confirmed information about whether Noreen was still receiving treatment at the hospital or had been transferred back to jail.<\/p>\n The court also sought an update on the return of the home secretary, who was reportedly abroad. However, the women remained in custody after the expiry of the initial detention period.<\/p>\n The provincial government subsequently informed the LHC on October 7<\/a> that their detention had been extended.<\/p>\n Raja calls Noreen’s detention unjustified<\/strong><\/p>\n Raja criticised the continued detention of Imran’s three sisters, questioning the justification for keeping Noreen in custody despite her illness. Speaking about the LHC proceedings, he said there was no justification for detaining an elderly woman in poor health.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no justification for keeping an old ailing woman in detention like this. We are present here, and our request is that it be heard today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He also requested that one of Noreen’s daughters be allowed to stay with her.<\/p>\n Noreen was healthy before detention, says husband<\/strong><\/p>\n Noreen’s husband, Ahad Khan, said she had been in good health before being sent to jail and that her condition had deteriorated during detention.<\/p>\n \u201cBefore going to jail, Noreen had no health problems. She was completely healthy. All of this happened after she went to jail,\u201d he said. He added that she had not been allowed to meet anyone during her detention.<\/p>\n \u201cImran is a strong man. He has endured solitary confinement for a year. Women are not strong enough to endure solitary confinement, which is why she fell ill,\u201d Ahad said. Their sycophants will never tell them,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n A day earlier, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said<\/a> the government would look into reports that Noreen’s relatives had been denied permission to visit her in custody and would try to ensure they were granted access.<\/p>\n \u201cLet me ask the relevant authorities about the claim that the relatives of Noreen Niazi have not been allowed to see her,\u201d Sanaullah said. \u201cWe will try to have her relatives granted access to her,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Speaking about Noreen’s health, Sanaullah said she had been transferred to hospital for treatment immediately after complaining of poor health.
