Song blends Urdu, Shina lyrics with visuals showcasing Gilgit-Baltistan’s music, traditional attire and freestyle polo

Singer Hasan Raheem has submitted his song Bewajah for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards in two categories: Best Music Video and Best Global Music Performance.

The singer announced the submission on Instagram through a post shared by the Hasan Raheem Global page, captioned “BEWAJAH | FOR YOUR GRAMMY®️ CONSIDERATION”.

The post listed both categories, marking a notable moment for Raheem as his music continues to bring the sounds and traditions of his native Gilgit-Baltistan to wider audiences.

The submission does not guarantee a Grammy nomination, but it places Bewajah in contention for consideration at one of the music industry’s most prestigious awards. It is notable not only for the song itself but also for the cultural heritage it represents.

While Best Global Music Performance recognises music from across diverse traditions, Best Music Video focuses on the visual production accompanying a recording. Bewajah brings the two elements together through its musical influences and portrayal of northern Pakistan.

A tribute to Gilgit-Baltistan

Released in March 2026, Bewajah features producer Umair and blends Urdu lyrics with a bridge in Shina, a language spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan. The track draws on the region’s musical identity, combining emotional storytelling with sounds rooted in Raheem’s cultural heritage.

The music video is equally central to the song’s appeal. Filmed in Gilgit, Pakistan, it unfolds against the region’s dramatic mountainous landscape, incorporating traditional clothing, Gilgiti dance and a freestyle polo match. Raheem, dressed in white and adorned with jewellery, stands out against the dark-clad players and spectators, while the surrounding mountains add to the video’s striking cinematography.

By placing freestyle polo, traditional attire and local dance at the centre of its visual narrative, the video gives the release a distinct cultural identity that extends beyond its musical arrangement.

He has also spoken about freestyle polo, a sport closely associated with the region’s Shandur Polo Festival, describing it as an experience everyone should witness at least once. The video’s setting reflects his continuing interest in bringing the traditions of Gilgit-Baltistan to wider audiences.

Raheem rose to wider prominence with tracks including Aisay Kaisay and Joona, later expanding his audience through collaborations and appearances on Coke Studio Pakistan. His work has frequently drawn on his roots, making Gilgit-Baltistan an important part of his artistic identity.
