{"id":11437,"date":"2023-10-06T12:17:41","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T12:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/jailed-iran-rights-campaigner-narges-mohammadi-wins-peace-nobel\/"},"modified":"2023-10-06T12:17:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T12:17:41","slug":"jailed-iran-rights-campaigner-narges-mohammadi-wins-peace-nobel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/jailed-iran-rights-campaigner-narges-mohammadi-wins-peace-nobel\/","title":{"rendered":"Jailed Iran rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi wins peace Nobel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to imprisoned women\u2019s rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, honoured for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi was honoured \u201cfor her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all\u201d, said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi has spent much of the past two decades in and out of jail for her campaign against the mandatory hijab for women and the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>She is the vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Centre founded by Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi, herself a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.dawn.com\/news\/119581\/iran-woman-lawyer-wins-nobel-peace-prize\">Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2003<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The committee hoped Iran would release her so she could attend the prize ceremony in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Iranian authorities make the right decision, they will release her. So she can be present to receive this honour, which is what we primarily hope for,\u201d Reiss-Andersen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The award \u201creally highlights the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration to the world\u201d, UN human rights office spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell told reporters in Geneva.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1725746\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Last year, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, the prize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1714019\">went to a symbolic trio<\/a> opposed to the war \u2014 Russian human rights group Memorial, Ukraine\u2019s Center for Civil Liberties and jailed Belarusian rights advocate Ales Bialiatski.<\/p>\n<p>The prize comes with a gold medal, a diploma and a prize sum of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1m).<\/p>\n<p>The award will be presented at a formal ceremony in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of the prizes\u2019 creator, Swedish inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel.<\/p>\n<p>The Peace Prize is the only Nobel awarded in Oslo, with the other disciplines announced in Stockholm.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1779372\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>On Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779449\">Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse<\/a>, whose plays are among the most widely staged of any contemporary playwright in the world, won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel season winds up on Monday with the Nobel economics prize.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"\" href=\"#\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Mohammadi has not seen her children for eight years, has spent most of her recent life in prison and acknowledges there is no immediate prospect of release.<\/p>\n<p>Yet still, she insists her struggle is worthwhile, saying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1717476\">protest movement<\/a> that erupted one year ago in Iran against the Islamic republic is still alive.<\/p>\n<p>First arrested 22 years ago, Mohammadi, 51, has spent much of the past two decades in and out of jail over her unstinting campaigning for human rights in Iran. She has most recently been incarcerated since November 2021.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Iranian journalist Taghi Rahmani, jailed Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi\u2019s husband, poses during a photo session in Paris, on October 19, 2022. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The activist \u201cis the most determined person I know\u201d, her husband Taghi Rahmani, who has been a refugee in France since 2012 with their two children, twins now aged 17, told <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has three causes in her life \u2014 respect for human rights, her feminist commitment and justice for all the crimes that have been committed,\u201d said Rahmani.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1717128\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While she could only witness from behind bars the protests that broke out following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1710846\">death<\/a> on Sept 16, 2022 of Mahsa Amini \u2014 who had been arrested for violating Iran\u2019s strict dress rules for women \u2014 she says the movement made clear the levels of dissatisfaction in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government was not able to break the protests of the people of Iran,\u201d she told <em>AFP<\/em> in September in written answers from Tehran\u2019s Evin prison where she is held, describing the protest wave as \u201cirreversible.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"heart-that-breaks\" href=\"#heart-that-breaks\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Heart that breaks\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Iranian women\u2019s rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi is seen at her home in Tehran on Sept 4, 2001. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi told <em>AFP<\/em> in September she was currently serving a combined sentence of 10 years and nine months in prison, had also been sentenced to 154 lashes and had five cases against her linked to her activities in jail alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have almost no prospect of freedom,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International describes her as a prisoner of conscience who has been arbitrarily detained.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi has missed much of the childhood of her twin children, Kiana and Ali, as well as the pain of being apart from her husband Rahmani. \u201cIn 24 years of marriage, we had just five or six years of living together!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As well as not seeing the children for eight years, restrictions placed by the prison on her telephone calls mean she has not even heard their voices for more than a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy most incurable and indescribable suffering is the longing to be with my children, from whose lives I departed when they were eight,\u201d she told <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe price of the struggle is not only torture and prison, it is a heart that breaks with every regret and a pain that strikes to the marrow of your bones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she added: \u201cI believe that as long as democracy, equality and freedom have not been achieved, we must continue to fight and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"voice-of-the-voiceless\" href=\"#voice-of-the-voiceless\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Voice of the voiceless<\/h2>\n<p>Born in 1972 in Zanjan, in the northwest of Iran, Mohammadi studied physics before becoming an engineer. But she then launched a new career in journalism, working for newspapers that were at the time part of the reformist movement.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2000s, she joined the Center for Human Rights Defenders, founded by Shirin Ebadi, fighting in particular for the abolition of the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNarges had the possibility of leaving the country but she always refused\u2026 She became the voice of the voiceless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in prison, she does not forget her duties and provides information about the situation of the prisoners,\u201d said Reza Moini, an Iranian human rights activist based in Paris who knows her well.<\/p>\n<p>In her book <em>White Torture<\/em>, Mohammadi denounced prisoners\u2019 conditions of detention, in particular the use of solitary confinement, which she says she herself also suffered.<\/p>\n<p>Regular updates about the situation in prison are posted on her Instagram account run by her family.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammadi and fellow inmates during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776097\">anniversary<\/a> of Mahsa Amini\u2019s death staged a symbolic protest in the yard of Evin by burning their headscarves.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to imprisoned women\u2019s rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi, honoured for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.
