KARACHI: A case has been registered against former project director Yellow Line BRT Zameer Abbassi under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, after which the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) presented the accused before the Court of the Sessions Judge South, ARY News reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The court remanded the accused to FIA custody until September 22. Requesting physical remand, the agency informed the court that custody was necessary to conduct further investigations and extract details regarding potential accomplices.<\/p>\n

The FIA stated that the accused is a Grade 19 officer who has been posted across various government departments.<\/p>\n

According to investigators, Abbassi opened benami accounts in the names of his father, wife, and frontmen, while laundering money through illegal hawala and hundi channels.<\/p>\n

The agency added that he undertook 24 foreign trips to manage his overseas funds.<\/p>\n

Between 2012 and 2026, as many as 1,100 transactions totaling over Rs 5.55 billion were made into accounts linked to the accused.<\/p>\n

The FIA further revealed that Abbassi\u2019s father and wife transferred money directly into his accounts and that the suspect paid a staggering Rs 35.5 million across seven life insurance policies over the past eight years.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Karachi has also launched an inquiry into alleged irregularities and advance payments made in the Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Yellow Line project, according to NAB sources.<\/p>\n

NAB Chairman has directed the Director General of NAB Karachi to investigate the matter, sources said.<\/p>\n

The bureau will examine the release of advance payments worth Rs8.5 billion in the BRT Yellow Line project and review what work was completed after the payments were made and what remained pending, NAB sources added.<\/p>\n

The inquiry will also assess all relevant aspects, including the payment process and whether legal procedures were followed.<\/p>\n

Former Project Director of the BRT Yellow Line project, Zameer Ahmed Abbasi, has already been arrested in connection with the case. He was taken into custody by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) from Lahore after his bail application was rejected.<\/p>\n

The ACE investigation is still ongoing, while the challan has not yet been submitted before the court.<\/p>\n

Before this, the ACE registered a case against Abbasi, who was serving as Project Director of the Karachi Mobility Project (KMP), along with former Director Procurement Jhaman Das and other officials over alleged corruption and irregularities in the project.<\/p>\n

An anti-corruption court had dismissed Abbasi\u2019s bail plea in an Rs8.5 billion corruption case related to the BRT Yellow Line project.<\/p>\n

During the hearing, the court raised questions over the payment mechanism and observed that the circumstances indicated the possible involvement of \u201cbig players\u201d in the case.<\/p>\n

The special anti-corruption court heard Abbasi\u2019s bail application regarding alleged financial irregularities in the BRT Yellow Line project. The Sindh government\u2019s public prosecutor, however, did not oppose the bail plea.<\/p>\n

Abbasi\u2019s lawyer argued that payments were released only after fulfilling required conditions and securing bank guarantees.<\/p>\n

The court questioned whether all terms and conditions had been completed before the payments were issued. The defence lawyer responded that it was the prosecution\u2019s responsibility to prove any violation of rules.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
