A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor \u200bran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, China’s \u200cstate broadcaster reported on Saturday, beating the human world record held by Jamaican sprinting great Usain Bolt.<\/p>\n

The robot, \u200bdubbed Lightning, reached a peak speed of \u200b14.5 meters per second during a preparatory \u2060test event for the second World Humanoid \u200bRobot Games, which opened in Beijing on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The \u200bperformance surpassed the 9.58-second men’s 100-metre world record set by Bolt at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in \u200b2009.<\/p>\n

China has been promoting humanoid robots as \u200ba strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that \u200cadvances \u2060in AI and hardware will accelerate their deployment in manufacturing, logistics and consumer applications.<\/p>\n

Lightning also won the 21-km Beijing half marathon in April in \u200b50 minutes \u200band 26 \u2060seconds, faster than the elite men’s human world-record pace.<\/p>\n

The robot stood \u200b169 cm tall and had 95-cm \u200blegs \u2060at the half marathon. Researchers have since lengthened its legs by 10 cm to 1.05 metres \u2060ahead \u200bof the World Humanoid Robot \u200bGames, China Central Television reported.<\/p>\n
