Adelphi, Md., July 20, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) will continue its longstanding on-the-ground support for U.S. military learners across the Middle East, North Africa\u00a0and deployed locations under a follow-on contract awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0agreement, which begins July 31, 2026, extends through academic year 2030\u20132031 and continues UMGC\u2019s role as a global education provider for servicemembers whose missions, schedules and locations require flexible academic options. Under the contract, UMGC will\u00a0continue to\u00a0provide\u00a0undergraduate and select graduate\u00a0coursework\u00a0and services\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as well\u00a0as\u00a0management\u00a0of national test centers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0at 12 sites in eight countries, including Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi\u00a0Arabia\u00a0and the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

UMGC\u00a0has held\u00a0similar contracts to provide these services in the Middle East and Africa\u00a0since May 2008, when\u00a0the first\u00a0five-year contract was\u00a0awarded.\u00a0\u00a0At\u00a0locations throughout the region, UMGC team members live and work alongside\u00a0the learners they serve, providing in-person coaching, instruction, and support\u00a0to servicemembers\u00a0and their families\u00a0as they\u00a0pursue\u00a0their educations\u00a0while carrying out some of the nation\u2019s most important missions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Under the contract, active-duty military personnel in the region will have\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0services designed to support academic progress amid deployments,\u00a0relocations\u00a0and nontraditional schedules.\u00a0<\/p>\n

UMGC has served military-affiliated students overseas for more than 75 years, beginning in Europe in 1949 and expanding to Asia in 1956.\u00a0That tradition continues uninterrupted to this day, and\u00a0the university began offering courses in the Middle East in 2005 and continues to support students in complex operating environments around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those environments have included active conflict zones, beginning with the university\u2019s first classes in\u00a0Saigon\u00a0at the outset of the Vietnam War. In recent years,\u00a0UMGC has served military learners downrange in\u00a0both\u00a0Afghanistan and Iraq, where UMGC\u00a0was the first university to offer \u201cboots on the ground\u201d instruction\u00a0at locations including Camp Victory in Baghdad.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents in this region balance rigorous military responsibilities\u00a0and often challenging environments\u00a0with the demands of academic study,\u201d said Victor Macias, senior vice president for Global Military Operations at UMGC. \u201cThis contract allows us to continue\u00a0providing responsive,\u00a0learner-centered support\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0servicemembers\u00a0persist and succeed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

UMGC also holds contracts to offer instruction and support services in Europe and Asia\u00a0and serves\u00a0stateside\u00a0military learners\u00a0under memoranda of understanding with\u00a0installations throughout the country.\u00a0This\u00a0footprint allows\u00a0servicemembers to continue their education\u00a0as they traverse the\u00a0globe,\u00a0advancing the university\u2019s historic mission to serve adult learners and the military community wherever they are.\u00a0<\/p>\n
