The Senegalese football federation (FSF) president said on Monday toxicity surrounded the team at the World Cup after coach Pape\u00a0Thiaw\u00a0had demanded a pay rise.<\/p>\n

Thiaw\u00a0was sacked on Sunday after his side were knocked out in the last 32 by Belgium on July 1.<\/p>\n

“There was a breakdown in trust between Pape\u00a0Thiaw\u00a0and us”, FSF president\u00a0Abdoulaye\u00a0Fall told a press conference in Dakar, citing the initial failure to sign a new contract after\u00a0Thiaw’sdemand for more money.<\/p>\n

Thiaw, 45 and a former Senegal international, took over as national team boss in 2024.<\/p>\n

Prior to leaving for the World Cup, he had asked for a salary increase from 20 million CFA ($35,000) per month to 50 million CFA ($87,000).<\/p>\n

Ultimately the sides landed on an agreement of 30,000 CFA during the World Cup and also settled other disputes such as bonuses.<\/p>\n

At one point,\u00a0Thiaw\u00a0threatened not to travel to the World Cup if his demands were not met,\u00a0Fall\u00a0said, explaining Senegalese President\u00a0Bassirou\u00a0Diomaye\u00a0Faye convinced him to change his mind on the day the team were due to depart for the United States.<\/p>\n

Fall said the contract was signed on the eve of their second game in the tournament, against Norway, after\u00a0Thiaw\u00a0refused to sit in the dugout unless it was\u00a0finalised.<\/p>\n

Thiaw\u00a0believed the “federation officials were his enemies, and this impacted the national team’s operations”, Fall said.<\/p>\n

During the World Cup, the Lions of\u00a0Teranga\u00a0suffered two defeats in the group stage, against France and Norway, before a 5\u20130 victory over Iraq secured their place in the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n

Under\u00a0Thiaw, Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations final in January before being stripped of their title as a punishment for walking off the pitch during the\u00a0chaotic final against Morocco.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
