CEDARVILLE, OHIO, July 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Mountain rescuers\u00a0must quickly respond to emergency calls,\u00a0carefully\u00a0transporting\u00a0injured skiers\u00a0down slopes before they can receive medical treatment.<\/p>\n

Industrial Design Student Creates Ski Rescue Sled<\/b><\/p>\n

Luise Schmidt-Krayer, a 2026\u00a0industrial and innovative\u00a0design<\/a>\u00a0graduate\u00a0from\u00a0Gummersbach, Germany,\u00a0grew up skiing and, when presented with the opportunity to design her own product, knew that she wanted to\u00a0assist\u00a0those involved in the sport.\u00a0When\u00a0researching\u00a0trends in\u00a0skiing\u00a0for her senior capstone project at\u00a0Cedarville University<\/a>,\u00a0Schmidt-Krayer became interested in the challenges that ski patrollers face when transporting injured skiers.\u00a0She then\u00a0designed a sled\u00a0that\u00a0addresses\u00a0the\u00a0major challenges\u00a0patrollers face by\u00a0reducing\u00a0patient movement\u00a0and\u00a0decreasing\u00a0the weight rescuers\u00a0must pull.<\/p>\n

Researching Challenges in Ski Patrol Rescue Operations<\/b><\/p>\n

Schmidt-Krayer\u00a0observed\u00a0snow patrollers\u2019 equipment and processes\u00a0at Snow Trails,\u00a0a skiing, snowboarding\u00a0and snow tubing\u00a0resort\u00a0in Mansfield, Ohio.\u00a0While\u00a0observing, Schmidt-Krayer\u00a0talked to patrollers whose ages ranged from mid-thirties to early eighties.\u00a0These patrollers are\u00a0required\u00a0to carry the weight of both the individual they are\u00a0rescuing\u00a0and the\u00a0steel\u00a0sled that they\u00a0are pulling,\u00a0at times\u00a0over flat terrain,\u00a0where gravity no longer\u00a0assists\u00a0them. Though the equipment currently used\u00a0is\u00a0effective,\u00a0patrollers mentioned\u00a0a lighter sled\u00a0would\u00a0help\u00a0reduce\u00a0strain.<\/p>\n

New Ski Transport Design Reduces Patient Movement<\/b><\/p>\n

As Schmidt-Krayer began\u00a0sketching\u00a0her ideas, she decided to focus on\u00a0designing a sled that would\u00a0minimize patient movement\u00a0while providing greater ease and flexibility for the\u00a0rescuer. To\u00a0avoid worsening injuries,\u00a0ski patrollers\u00a0strive to\u00a0move\u00a0their patients\u00a0as little as possible. Rather than requiring patrollers to\u00a0lift\u00a0patients on\u00a0stretchers, Schmidt-Krayer’s\u00a0design\u00a0provides\u00a0a\u00a0scoop mechanism that\u00a0allows patients to be securely lifted with minimal movement.\u00a0The sled separates into two sections, both\u00a0sliding\u00a0beneath\u00a0the patient before reconnecting. This movement reduces\u00a0the amount of lifting and rolling\u00a0required\u00a0during transport.<\/p>\n

Lightweight Rescue Sled Eases Strain on Ski Patrollers<\/b><\/p>\n

The frame, at\u00a0roughly 30\u00a0pounds, is also much lighter than the average product on the market, which ranges from 45 to 50 pounds.<\/p>\n

Schmidt-Krayer said\u00a0the project taught her how to\u00a0design for\u00a0users, allowing\u00a0research and testing to\u00a0alter\u00a0the\u00a0product\u00a0as needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to lead my research,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Schmidt-Krayer. \u201cI wanted the research to lead me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schmidt-Krayer\u00a0emphasized\u00a0the importance of\u00a0remembering\u00a0the people she is\u00a0designing for\u00a0as she\u00a0creates\u00a0products.<\/p>\n

“I don\u2019t want to just design products for the sake of designing products,\u201d said Schmidt-Krayer. \u201cI want to design products that serve people in meaningful ways, regardless of what field I am designing for.\u201d<\/p>\n
