Austria has proposed that the European Union should consider hosting Anthropic within \u200bthe bloc’s borders in order to counter efforts \u200cby the United States to block<\/a> foreigners from using the AI company’s most advanced models.<\/p>\n

In a letter to EU Technology Commissioner Henna \u200bVirkkunen released by the Austrian government, Austria’s State \u200bSecretary for Digitalisation, Alexander Proell, wrote it was \u2060important that Europe was not cut off from major \u200binnovations.<\/p>\n

“Let us jointly explore the strategic establishment and participation of \u200bAnthropic within the European Union. With legal certainty, market access, capital and a set of values that suit this company,” Proell \u200bsaid in the letter.<\/p>\n

He did not say how the \u200bstep could be taken and acknowledged there would be scepticism about whether \u200cit \u2060was possible.<\/p>\n

“The real question is not whether it is easy,” Proell wrote. “The question is whether we Europeans are prepared to be the architects of our technological future, \u200bor whether we \u200bwish to \u2060remain mere administrators of decisions made elsewhere.”<\/p>\n

Anthropic did not immediately reply to a request \u200bfor comment on the Austrian proposal.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, \u200bthe \u2060European Commission proposed laws<\/a> to boost domestic cloud, AI and semiconductor industries and cut reliance on US Big Tech, defying \u2060US \u200bgovernment criticism of the bloc’s crackdown \u200bon its industry.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
