US President Donald Trump could soon appear on a new $250 bill, in the Republican\u2019s latest move to shatter US traditions by putting his personal stamp on national institutions.<\/p>\n

A proposal for the new bill, featuring a glaring Trump, was reported on Thursday by The Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. If carried out, it would be the first time the image of a living person \u2014 let alone a president \u2014 had appeared on US currency in a century and a half.<\/p>\n

The design mock-up obtained by The Washington Post<\/em> also shows the words \u201cAmerica 250 anniversary,\u201d a nod to the United States declaring its independence on July 4, 1776.<\/p>\n

According to the Post<\/em>, two Trump appointees at the Treasury Department last year began urging staff at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to prepare prototypes.<\/p>\n

Employees there, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Post<\/em> that the plan raised concerns because it would violate a federal law banning the depiction of living presidents on US money.<\/p>\n

Printing bureau director Patricia Solimene had pushed back, warning officials, including US Treasurer Brandon Beach, of legal and procedural obstacles, the employees told the Post<\/em>. Solimene was abruptly reassigned from her role, the paper reported.<\/p>\n

Such worries have not stopped the Trump administration from pressing ahead with its effort to slap his likeness or name on cultural institutions and other items \u2014 sparking accusations of a cult of personality around the 79-year-old leader.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the US Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump, unanimously approved<\/a> the minting of a commemorative \u201cSemiquincentennial Gold Coin\u201d made of 24-carat gold.<\/p>\n

In recent months, both the John F Kennedy Centre<\/a> for the Performing Arts and the US Institute of Peace<\/a> have been rebranded to include Trump\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

His likeness also stares down from banners draping the Department of Justice and Department of Agriculture \u2014 and it will soon appear in some US passports<\/a>, according to the State Department.<\/p>\n

Legislation<\/a> to allow Trump to appear on a $250 bill was introduced to Congress last year but has sat idle.<\/p>\n

A Treasury spokesperson told the paper that the printing office \u201cis conducting appropriate planning and due diligence\u201d in response to the proposed legislation.<\/p>\n

Reaction among Democrats was critical, with Senator Mark Warner, a member of the Senate\u2019s banking committee, saying the unprecedented proposal amounted to the White House blatantly \u201cstoking the president\u2019s ego\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
