Former foreign minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said that the world does not have a \u201cplan B\u201d if the US-Iran talks fail to yield the desired results and emphasised the need for the negotiations to lead to a peaceful resolution to the Middle East war.<\/p>\n

Bilawal shared these thoughts in an interview with Sky News<\/em>, where he was asked ahead of the talks scheduled in Islamabad for Saturday, \u201cdon\u2019t result in a formal treaty\u201d during the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, \u201cdo you have a plan B to prevent a return to full-scale hostilities\u201d.<\/p>\n

In his response, Bilawal said: \u201cI think the international community doesn\u2019t have a plan B. Our Plan A needs to be achieving a peaceful resolution to this conflict and a more permanent peace. I think the way this conflict has played out has proven that a war of this nature, a war of this scale, is not an option.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s up to us, up to the disputing parties, up to all countries, to push all sides to agree to that peace so that we don\u2019t get drawn into potentially broader conflict than what we have seen over the course of last month.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks come a day before Islamabad is to host peace talks between the delegations of Washington and Tehran, after Pakistan brokered<\/a> a temporary ceasefire between the two warring parties.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Bilawal said all eyes were on the visiting delegations arriving in Islamabad.<\/p>\n

\u201cPakistan, London, New York and many other countries in the Middle East have been affected by this war,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cWe can measure the toll of this conflict not only in the loss of human lives but the economic cost that is borne by the people in my country and in yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, he continued, \u201cwe all are hopeful that this space that has been achieved, this ceasefire that has been achieved is now be built upon towards a more lasting and permanent peace for the benefit of the international community\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked about the challenges being faced by Pakistan in its diplomatic efforts, he said: \u201cPakistan\u2019s role is to play the host to both these parties that will be directly negotiating here in Islamabad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest achievement so far is that we reached this point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bilawal added that there would be challenges for the US and Iran as well, particularly highlighting the \u201cwide trust deficit that exists between the two warring parties\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as with all diplomatic negotiations and engagements, I am confident that there will be confidence-building measures that both sides will take in order to increase the space for dialogue and diplomacy in their pursuit of peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He was also asked to share his views on the \u201cchatter regarding the Nobel Peace Prize nomination for Pakistan\u2019s leadership\u201d and \u201ccritics who suggest that they are prioritising, I suppose, the international image over complexities of the talks\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bilawal said in his response: \u201cThe first I heard about the Nobel Peace Prize for Pakistan is from you, and this criticism about focusing on the image also.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIran is our neighbour; Afghanistan is our other neighbour. We witnessed two decades of war and two different conflicts in Afghanistan, and are still dealing with the consequences. We are in perpetual conflict with India. We absolutely do not want the conflict in Iran to be exacerbated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of Pakistan can\u2019t afford it. I would argue that people all across the world can\u2019t afford it. That is in and all of Pakistan\u2019s motivation, desperation, that all sides achieve peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cIt\u2019s a particularly hairy situation for us here economically, and the news we have seen, internationally, from everywhere, from Australia, from the Philippines, from Europe \u2014 there is an incredible concern that it is going to be one of the significant economic shocks in our lifetime as well. So, as far as the peace prize is concerned, I think Pakistan and everyone would settle just to achieve peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a separate interview with BBC<\/em>, Bilawal was asked about US President Donald Trump accusing Pakistan of \u201clying and deceit\u201d during his first term in the top office and the shift seen since then.<\/p>\n

To that, Bilawal said he would view Trump\u2019s past remarks \u201cas a past statement\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ground realities are now very different. I believe Pakistan has managed to change its perception, internationally, geopolitically, and, of course, in the context of Washington. And I\u2019m hopeful that we are able to build on those gains for the benefit of not just Pakistan, but the international community \u2026 in the form of meaningful peace between our neighbour Iran and the US,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In reply to another question, he said Pakistan \u201cis lucky to enjoy good, substantive neighbourly relations with China, as well as maintain longstanding and historic ties with the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cPakistan has, historically, been that bridge. We were the ones who helped in establishing the diplomatic relations between the United States and China back in the Nixon era.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely, it\u2019s right to note that during these negotiations [between Iran and the US], the foreign minister of Pakistan went to China, where they jointly announced an endorsement of five points for this ceasefire as well. So I think it\u2019s valuable to take note of China\u2019s input to this entire thing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
