Russia said it had unwavering solidarity with Cuba on Tuesday, after United States\u00a0President Donald Trump said he expected to have the honour of\u00a0“taking \u200bCuba”<\/a>\u00a0and that “I can do anything I want” with the Communist-run \u200cisland republic.<\/p>\n

Without mentioning Trump by name, Russia’s foreign ministry expressed serious concern about the escalation of tension around what it cast as the “Island of Liberty”.<\/p>\n

“Russia reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with \u200bthe government and fraternal people of Cuba,” the ministry said.<\/p>\n

“We strongly \u200bcondemn attempts of gross interference in the internal affairs of a \u2060sovereign state, intimidation and the use of illegal unilateral restrictive measures.”<\/p>\n

Trump has \u200bstepped up economic pressure on Cuba, imposing an oil blockade that has crippled \u200bits already obsolete power generation system.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin said it was in \u200ccontact \u2060with Cuban leadership and that Moscow was ready to provide all possible assistance.<\/p>\n

“Today, Liberty Island is facing unprecedented challenges, which have become a direct result of the long-term trade, economic, financial, and more recently, the US energy embargo against \u200bCuba,” Russia’s foreign \u200bministry said.<\/p>\n

Russia said \u2060it provided and would continue “to provide Cuba with the necessary support, including financial support”.<\/p>\n

Russia was deprived of an ally when \u200bthe US toppled Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, though Russia \u200bhas benefited \u2060from the high oil prices triggered by the US\u00a0and Israeli attack on Iran, a strategic partner of Moscow.<\/p>\n

Cuba was a close ally of Moscow for decades \u2060after \u200bthe Communist revolution in 1959 that brought Fidel \u200bCastro to power until the collapse of the Soviet Union. More recently, Russia has supported the island \u200bwith both financing and material goods.<\/p>\n
