Microprocessor engineer Jim Keller notes that open-source chips are improving steadily<\/p>\n
The development of AI chips will become easier and cheaper with open-source technology, \u201cas long as the hardware chips are really programmable and people can be creative about how they build the new solutions,\u201d said a chip expert.<\/p>\n
Jim Keller, a US-based microprocessor engineer who has worked at AMD, Apple, and Tesla, told Anadolu that \u201cactually, AI processors are simpler than people think.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd people would like you to believe you need $100 billion to develop an AI processor \u2014 you don\u2019t,\u201d he said, speaking on the sidelines of GITEX Global in Dubai, one of the world\u2019s leading tech and AI events.<\/p>\n
Keller stated his firm, Tenstorrent, developed open-source technology ranging from AI processors to general-purpose processors, while they also made the AI compiler open-source, meaning it is publicly available.<\/p>\n
He noted that open-source chips cost less and feature a more accessible structure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current models are really good; they\u2019re still getting better,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery day I read an article that something\u2019s hit a limit — we haven\u2019t got close to the limit. The demand for it is really, really big; so, I don\u2019t know, the next five years are going to be really interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Keller stated that some countries\u2019 restrictions on the chip sector are not going to work out in the long run, \u201cbecause some of the technology is really open already, [and]\u00a0people publish a lot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat turns out is [that], when you restrict one area, you just force that area to develop it by themselves, and then so far what\u2019s happened is that [it]\u00a0just means they catch up,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope we get to a world where it\u2019s more open and there\u2019s less restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery company is kind of different, right, [and]\u00a0they have different cultures,\u201d he noted regarding his work at AMD, Apple and Tesla.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe thing that works best is when the team is driving towards a really good goal, like a great product, and then I really like when the engineers can own their own work and be really inspired about what they do every day and who they work with,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like to create a really open environment where everybody gets to learn, gets to do something, [and]\u00a0gets to own their destiny,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
