Wearing helmets now mandatory for both riders on motorcycles – Pakistan Observer

ISLAMABAD — The Islamabad Capital Territory Police have made it mandatory for both the rider and passenger on a motorcycle to wear helmets in a significant move to enhance road safety.

The decision aims to reduce the rising number of fatalities in road accidents involving two-wheelers. According to officials, the new rule will come into effect after a two-week awareness campaign, during which the public will be educated on the importance of helmet use.

Chief Traffic Officer Syed Zeeshan Haider stated that after the awareness period, strict fines will be imposed on violators found riding without helmets — regardless of whether they are in the front or rear seat.

“This initiative is intended to save lives. Accidents involving motorcycles often result in fatal head injuries, which can be prevented through proper helmet use,” he said.

Why Helmets Matter

Helmets are proven to reduce the risk of head injury by 69% and the risk of death by 42% in motorcycle crashes, according to global road safety studies.

They provide critical protection to the skull and brain, especially in high-speed or collision scenarios. In many countries, making helmets mandatory has led to a noticeable decline in road fatalities.

The Islamabad Traffic Police have urged all citizens to follow the rule not just for fear of fines, but for their own safety and the safety of loved ones.
