In a significant move, 46 members of the US Congress have called on President Joe Biden to push for the immediate release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and other political prisoners, stressing the need to ensure their safety in line with the UN Working Group’s findings.
The lawmakers sent a letter to the outgoing president on Friday, urging him to take action based on the provisions of H. Res. 901, a resolution passed overwhelmingly by the US House of Representatives in June 2024.
The letter highlights concerns about human rights violations and the erosion of civil liberties in Pakistan following the controversial February 2024 elections, which were marred by irregularities, fraud, and state-led suppression of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
The lawmakers criticize the role of the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, for not adequately addressing the concerns of the Pakistani American community, particularly regarding the release of political prisoners and the restoration of democratic principles.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023, facing multiple charges from corruption to terrorism, and his detention is viewed by many as politically motivated. The letter also draws attention to the widespread curbs on civil liberties, including restrictions on freedom of expression and social media platforms.
The lawmakers also expressed disappointment over the lack of efforts by the US embassy to advocate for political prisoners and human rights in Pakistan. This follows a similar letter sent last month by 60 members of the House of Representatives urging Biden to use US leverage to press Pakistan’s government for Khan’s release.
The lawmakers’ call represents a unified push from both Democratic and Republican parties to address the human rights situation in Pakistan and seek the immediate release of political prisoners, including Khan.
