LAHORE – Investigations into a targeted attack on Lahore Police are underway, with two police personnel detained over alleged contacts with suspected terrorists, the police sources said on Friday.
The police sources said that Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and a a constable have been taken into custody for questioning.
Sources said photographs of ASI with suspected militant Rehan Butt were found on social media. Constable, who was posted at Lootar Mal Police Station, has also been detained.
Police officials said both personnel were allegedly in contact with the terrorist suspected of involvement in the attack. They were detained following preliminary investigations, and further interrogation is underway.
Meanwhile, another video has emerged showing the suspects allegedly involved in the killing of police personnel in Badami Bagh and Nawan Kot.
Three suspects can reportedly be seen carrying weapons in the footage. Police identified two of them as Rehan Butt and Fayyaz Butt, while the identity of a third suspect remained unknown initially.
Police sources later identified the third suspect as 32-year-old Tariq, a resident of Bagh district in Azad Kashmir.
According to police, a case had previously been registered against Tariq at Ravi Road Police Station under relevant sections of the law. His details were obtained through hotel records, and investigators said he had been staying at Rehan Butt’s residence for some time.
The police sources said Tariq was in contact with Rehan and had met him on several occasions. Rehan Butt and his father, Fayyaz Butt, were killed in a police encounter in Sheikhupura, according to officials.
Investigators said Tariq separated from Rehan and his father near the Ravi River drain and fled the area.
The police teams are continuing efforts to locate and arrest Tariq while investigations into the alleged links between the detained personnel and the suspects are also ongoing.
