Tim Burton, the director of “Beetlejuice”, surprised everyone with his appearance at France’s Lumiere Festival. He walked the red carpet in Lyon alongside Benicio Del Toro and Monica Bellucci, making an unexpected entrance at the event.
Monica Bellucci, attending the event for her documentary premiere, playfully glanced back at the curtain and pulled out Tim Burton. The director’s unexpected appearance thrilled the crowd, who erupted in applause.
Looking back, Tim Burton fell in love with Monica Bellucci at the 2022 ceremony when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The actress also presented him with the trophy during the event.
Monica Bellucci worked with Tim Burton in his popular movie franchise “Beetlejuice” and its sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. Before Burton’s surprise appearance, the event honored actor Michael Blanc for his significant contribution to the French film industry before his passing in early October. The crowd lit up their phones and sang along to a medley of songs, paying tribute to the beloved French actor.
Later in the ceremony, director Thierry Frémaux continued the long-standing tradition of screening the Lumière Brothers’ film, reminding the audience that Lyon is the birthplace of cinema. He smiled at Benicio del Toro and remarked, “I know the cinephile in you will appreciate these.”
In the coming days of the event, Justine Triet, director of “Anatomy of a Fall?”, will inaugurate the new film screenings and invite the Lyon audience to watch her favorite movies. As the Cannes Film Festival director, Thierry Frémaux will also personally present a few Cannes premieres. These include Claude Lelouch’s “Finalement”, Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Most Precious of Cargoes”—his first animated feature—and Coralie Forgeat’s “The Substance”.
