Rock anthem gets hits again
A nostalgic punk rock track from nearly two decades ago is experiencing a massive resurgence, thanks to the recent success of Superman.
The Man of Steel’s latest film has unexpectedly propelled the song back into the spotlight, highlighting how powerful music placement can be in modern blockbusters.
James Gunn’s signature style of blending eclectic soundtracks—often featuring a mix of deep cuts and popular hits—continues to resonate. In the new Superman film, the ending credits feature the Teddybears’ “Punkrocker,” a track that originally debuted over 19 years ago and features legendary musician Iggy Pop. Its inclusion appears to have sparked a wave of renewed interest.
Following the film’s opening, “Punkrocker” soared on Spotify’s Daily Viral Song Global chart, leaping from around 1,500 streams daily to nearly 190,000. The song now sits at number two on the chart, just behind Netflix’s animated hit “K-Pop Demon Hunters” with its track “Golden.”
Music experts and fans alike are noting the impact of this sync, with some calling it a “cultural revival” for the track. The timing couldn’t be better for the film, which continues to draw crowds worldwide, with analysts estimating it could earn upwards of $62.5 million over the weekend.
