LAHORE – Singer and social activist Jawad Ahmad has come under severe criticism on social media following a controversial statement about women’s veil (purdah) during a recent podcast.
Jawad Ahmad made headlines after getting into a heated exchange with a female listener during the podcast. The situation escalated when the woman reportedly criticized him, prompting a strong response from the singer.
Jawad Ahmad told her that one should also reflect on their own conduct before criticizing others.
During the discussion, Jawad Ahmad claimed that women today enjoy the freedom to live according to their own choices due to the struggles of people like him. However, his remarks sparked controversy when he gave examples related to women’s dress.
He said that former prime minister Imran Khan’s wife wears a burqa and that his sisters cover their heads, adding, “If Mahira Khan wears a burqa, how will she dance?” The statement was widely perceived as insensitive and inappropriate.
As the video clip went viral, the social media users strongly condemned Jawad Ahmad’s remarks. The controversy has reignited debate on respectful discourse, women’s autonomy, and public figures’ responsibility when discussing sensitive social issues.
