  • Pakistan successfully chased 107 runs against Canada.
  • Pakistan needs other results to go their way.

Simon Doull, a former New Zealand cricketer and esteemed commentator, has endorsed Pakistan’s approach during their run-chase against Canada on Tuesday.

In a crucial T20 World Cup 2024 match, Pakistan successfully chased a target of 107 runs in 17.3 overs, losing only three wickets.

“We did see some aggressive intent [from Pakistan] but that pitch is very difficult to play anything across the line and to get the timing right down the ground. First and foremost, the two points were the big key for them and don’t have any periods where you let Canada back in the game and give your wickets away,” Doull commented on Cricbuzz.

Doull also underscored the significance of the net run-rate ahead of today’s match between India and the USA in New York.

“They still did it with 15 balls to spare which will do their run-rate a bit of good and India can help them with a comfortable win over the USA. Then Pakistan and USA might be on a similar sort of situation as far as run-rate is concerned by the end of tomorrow,” he further added.

This was Pakistan’s first victory in the tournament after previously losing to the USA and India.

With one more match remaining, here’s how Pakistan can advance to the T20 World Cup Super 8 round, considering other results.

June 12: USA vs India — India win

June 14: USA vs Ireland — Ireland win

June 15: Canada vs India — India win

June 16: Ireland vs Pakistan — Pakistan win

If all the outcomes align with the above scenario, Pakistan will accumulate four points from four matches, while India will have eight. The USA will conclude their group-stage campaign with the same points as Pakistan, while Canada and Ireland will each have two points.

In the aforementioned scenario, India will directly advance to the Super Eight, while the USA and Pakistan will each have four points. In this case, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will be a deciding factor. The Green Shirts need to secure a large-margin victory against Ireland and also hope for the USA to lose to India and Ireland by significant margins.
