Shock and Anger as open manhole claims Life of Another Child in Karachi – Pakistan Observer

KARACHI – Sindh capital Karachi is reeling from yet another shocking tragedy as young boy lost his life after falling into an open manhole in Korangi Mehran Town. The victim, identified as Dilbar Ali, fell while playing near his home in Sector 6G, highlighting the city’s alarming neglect of basic safety infrastructure.

Local residents acted heroically, pulling child out of the gaping sewer, but their efforts could not save him. Dilbar was immediately transferred to Jinnah Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s family members revealed that Dilbar was the only child of his parents, with his father working as a laborer to support the family. “All the drains in the area are open,” he lamented, pointing to widespread negligence.

Dilbar’s maternal uncle recounted the desperate rescue attempt: “I work in the neighborhood. After the incident, the child’s father and I pulled him out. I had to go into the manhole myself, tied with a rope.”

As residents of country’s largesty city mourns this innocent life, another tragedy struck nearby. Near Ibrahim Mosque at Malir Jinnah Square, a man suffocated to death while cleaning a sewer. According to Edhi authorities, his body was taken to the Malir City police station, and efforts are ongoing to confirm his identity. The deceased is estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old.

These back-to-back incidents underscore the city’s alarming infrastructure failures and the urgent need for authorities to secure open drains and protect both children and workers from preventable disasters.
