Rajinikanth watches Jailer 2 with fans for the first time in 40 years

DUBAI: The film’s production house said that Tamil superstar Rajinikanth stunned fans by attending a screening of his most recent movie, “Jailer 2,” in Chennai. This was his first time going to the movies in 40 years.

The 75-year-old actor, along with music composer Anirudh Ravichander and his grandson Linga, saw the movie at PVR Cinemas in Phoenix Marketcity, Velachery. Rajinikanth was seen coming to the theater and joining moviegoers for the screening in videos released by the producers. As the celebrity saw the action-packed sequel on the big screen, the crowd applauded.

The appearance coincides with “Jailer 2” continuing its successful theatrical run. According to box office tracker Sacnilk, the film’s worldwide gross earnings in its first ten days reached Rs 6.663 billion (Rs 666.3 crore).

On Saturday, October 24, the movie made Rs 241.5 million (Rs 24.15 crore) in India, a 66.6% increase over the day before. While foreign markets contributed Rs 2.295 billion (Rs 229.5 crore), its gross collections in India were Rs 4.368 billion (Rs 436.8 crore).

“Jailer 2,” which was produced by Kalanithi Maran and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar under Sun Pictures, debuted in theaters on October 15. Rajinikanth plays retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian, commonly known as Tiger, in this follow-up to the 2023 hit film “Jailer.”

The original movie’s global earnings of over Rs 6.047 billion (Rs 604.7 crore) have already been exceeded by the sequel. After Rajinikanth’s own 2018 science-fiction blockbuster “2.0,” which made over Rs 6.91 billion (Rs 691 crore), “Jailer 2” is now the second-highest-grossing Tamil movie globally.

Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Vinayakan are among the well-known characters who return in the sequel. Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, a Malayalam superstar, Shiva Rajkumar, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, S. J. Suryah, and Suraj Venjaramoodu are among the other members of the ensemble cast.

Another talking point about the movie’s box office performance is Rajinikanth’s choice to watch it with fans. The movie was screened in a theater for the first time in forty years, according to the producing company.

In a post on X last week, director Nelson Dilipkumar shared a photo of Rajinikanth alongside music composer Anirudh Ravichander to thank fans for the film’s positive reaction.

“Theatres are going bonkers! Thalaivar magic hits different,” Nelson wrote, expressing gratitude to viewers for the outstanding reaction to Jailer 2. He stated that it was especially satisfying to watch people celebrate the movie and thanked them for their love and support.
