KARACHI – The post-mortem examinations have been completed on the bodies of five members of a family found dead inside their apartment in Ahsanabad, the police said on Monday.
The police officials said that the preliminary post-mortem report has not determined the cause of death.
The final cause will be established after chemical examination of samples taken from the bodies.
Police said a case would be registered after the cause of death is confirmed.
The bodies were believed to be two to three days old when they were discovered inside a flat at Lakhani Twin Towers in the Site Super Highway area of Ahsanabad.
The deceased were identified as Dr Umar, his wife Mehwish and their daughter Zainab. The identities of the other two victims, both girls aged under 10, have not yet been established.
The bodies of the doctor, his wife and three children were recovered from the apartment after police gained entry. Officials said the flat had been locked from inside.
Police conducted a detailed search of the premises but did not find any mobile phone.
According to the initial investigation, the police broke open all the doors of the apartment to enter the premises. A key was later found near Dr Umar’s head as per the reports but police investigation yet to determine the situation.
Police sources said Dr Umar had been diagnosed with kidney cancer on August 13, after which he had reportedly been under considerable stress and resigned from his hospital job.
The investigation also found that Dr Umar’s wife had attempted to sell an oven from the house for Rs10,000 the previous week.
A neighbour did not purchase the appliance but reportedly provided her with Rs2,000 in financial assistance.
Dr Umar originally belonged to Bahawalnagar.
SSP East Zubair Nazir Sheikh had earlier said that Dr Umar had a brother living in Punjab, who had reportedly distanced himself from the family.
The police said they are continuing their investigation and are awaiting the chemical examination results to determine the circumstances and cause of the deaths.
