PM Sharif meets Azeri Minister, congratulates Baku to host COP-29

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, on Friday, held meeting with the Minister of Ecology and  Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev. The meeting held after Minister Babayev called on Prime Minister Sharif at PM’s house.

During the meeting, the Azeri Minister handed over the invitation letter to the Prime Minister Sharif, from President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to take part during the COP-29 meeting which is to be held in Baku in November 2024.

Noting to which, PM Sharif, extended gratitude to the President of Azerbaijan, for the warm invitation and congratulated him and the people of Azerbaijan on Baku’s selection to host the COP-29, the most important gathering of the world leaders this year to deliberate upon the challenges posed by the climate change.

While having talks with the Azerbaijan Minister, Mukhtar Babayev, PM Sharif said that, “Pakistan was among one of the most vulnerable nations that had borne the adverse impact of the climate change in the recent years, including the catastrophic floods of 2022.”

He further stressed on the need for urgent action to enhance the climate resilience. In this regard, he assured Azerbaijan of Pakistan’s full support and cooperation in ensuring the success of COP-29.

PM Sharif, accepting the invitation, said that, he is looking forward to participate during the COP-29 where he would also have the opportunity to have detailed conversation with the President Ilham Aliyev on the bilateral relationship, specifically for enhancing the bilateral trade and investment.

Along with this, he also reiterated his invitation to President Aliyev to undertake an official visit to Pakistan.

Minister Babayev, during the meeting, has extended gratitude to PM Sharif for receiving him and offering support from Pakistan for the successful organization of the COP-29. He assured that Azerbaijan is promising to work closely with Pakistan to set an agenda that suitably showcases the needs of the climate vulnerable nations.
