LAHORE – The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) declared more than 300 buildings in the city’s historic inner areas unsafe, a report submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) revealed on Wednesday.
The WCLA made this disclosure during hearing of a plea opposing permission for Basant-related activities.
The WCLA informed the court that a comprehensive survey of dangerous and dilapidated structures was conducted ahead of the kite-flying season.
The report stated that out of 346 rundown buildings identified in the Walled City, 183 have been declared beyond repair while 92 severely deteriorated buildings have already been vacated.
However, the report noted that 254 hazardous buildings remain occupied and could not be evacuated despite the risks. Of these, 103 have been classified as irreparable, while 151 have been declared repairable.
Among the buildings that have been vacated, 80 have been declared fit for demolition and 12 as repairable.
The WCLA warned that the rooftops of these unsafe structures are not suitable for Basant-related activities and pose a serious threat to public safety.
To mitigate the risks, the authority said it has begun displaying warning notices and public awareness banners across the area.
