New York: Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Mayor of New York and the youngest mayor in a century, was visibly moved during a meeting with citizens when he met a Pakistani woman who praised his approach and sincerity.
Mamdani met with 142 city residents to hear their concerns and suggestions for the city. Among them, a Pakistani woman named Samina approached him.
She explained that her English is limited and had written down her message. Congratulating Mamdani, she said, “In a world where people are divided, you have brought kindness and unity to the people.”
Curious about her background, Mamdani asked if she spoke Urdu. Samina confirmed, and while Mamdani admitted he cannot read Urdu, he said he can speak it.
When she mentioned she was from Lahore, Mamdani responded warmly, noting that Lahore is a beautiful city and that he had visited it once.
Samina also praised New York, saying, “New York is a beautiful city, the buildings are magnificent, but you have come and changed people’s hearts. The truth in your eyes cannot be hidden.” Mamdani was visibly touched by her words.
Mamdani took office recently, swearing in at City Hall with his hands on the Quran, pledging to serve all New Yorkers without discrimination.
In his inaugural speech, he emphasized that his administration marks a new era and reaffirmed his commitment to stand for the protection and welfare of every citizen.
