Lahore ranks second most polluted city globally as AQI hits ‘very unhealthy’ level – Pakistan Observer

LAHORE – Air quality in Lahore has reached a “very unhealthy” level as the city has been ranked second most polluted city in the world after Bangladesh capital of Dhaka.

The city has recorded a US AQI of 264, which is classified as very unhealthy, in morning, according to the IQAir.

The main pollutant is PM10, with concentrations measured at 399.9 µg/m³.

Authorities and health experts are urging residents to take precautions. Recommendations include avoiding outdoor exercise, keeping windows closed to reduce exposure to dirty air, and wearing protective masks when outside.

The current conditions pose serious health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.

Air pollution in Lahore results from multiple sources, including emissions from vehicles and industries, smoke from brick kilns, the burning of agricultural waste, and general trash.

Dust from construction activities also contributes, while the widespread removal of trees to make way for new roads and buildings further worsens air quality.

Meanwhile, under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Department of Environmental Protection has been actively combating smog and air pollution for several months.

Strict actions are being taken against violators of environmental laws as part of this campaign.
