KARACHI – The Karachi administration has announced the closure of a key section of University Road from Hassan Square to Nipa Chowrangi for all types of traffic starting November 10.
The decision has been taken due to major development work linked to the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and the K-IV water supply scheme.
According to a joint statement issued by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and the Sindh government, both tracks of University Road between Nipa Chowrangi and the Federal Urdu University (Nipa Bridge) will remain closed for 51 days, until December 30.
The closure is required to lay a 7-kilometer underground water pipeline network, which will later be connected to the K-IV bulk water supply project to improve water distribution across the city. Work has officially commenced today.
Officials said the project will be completed in two phases—the first phase from Nipa to the Federal Urdu University, followed by the second phase from Hassan Square to Nipa.
Alternate Routes
The development is expected to cause serious traffic congestion on alternative routes, including Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Gulistan-e-Jauhar, as the Red Line project has already slowed traffic in several parts of the city. Residents have also complained of dust and pollution due to ongoing construction activities.
The traffic police have issued a diversion plan, under which vehicles coming from Sabzi Mandi will be rerouted toward Gharibabad, while traffic from Nipa toward Hassan Square will be diverted to Rashid Minhas Road via Aladdin Park.
Authorities have appealed to commuters to follow the temporary traffic plan and cooperate with on-site officials to ensure smoother traffic flow during the construction period.
