KARACHI: Serious negligence by the administration of a private hospital has emerged in a case involving the alleged disappearance of a newborn in Karachi’s Nazimabad area, as conflicting medical records and statements have raised questions about what happened during the woman’s delivery.
The incident occurred at a private hospital in Gol Market, Nazimabad No. 3, where a woman was brought for delivery.
According to the family, doctors took the woman to the operation theatre for a delivery procedure but did not hand over the newborn to them. The hospital administration later allegedly told the family that the woman had not been pregnant.
Prof Dr Anjum Ara Hassan, a gynecologist and obstetrician who heads the hospital’s gynaecology department, has responded to the allegations.
In a video statement, Dr Anjum Ara claimed that the woman was not pregnant, saying that the hospital’s medical records, examination findings and laboratory reports supported its position.
However, sources said the hospital’s own documents recorded the live birth of a newborn, although the gender of the baby was not mentioned in the records.
Sources further said that hospital doctors had themselves declared the woman to be 40 weeks pregnant.
The conflicting information has raised questions about the hospital’s handling of the case, with a medical board launching an investigation into the matter.
The family has handed over all relevant medical and legal documents to the medical board.

The investigation committee has expanded its inquiry and questioned how an operation for delivery could have been initiated if the woman was not pregnant.
The medical board is examining all available evidence, including medical records, laboratory reports and other documents, to determine what happened.
The family said that, after some time, hospital staff informed them that no delivery had taken place because the woman was allegedly not pregnant.
The medical board is continuing its investigation into the conflicting claims and the circumstances surrounding the reported birth.
