Karachi administration has initiated key measures to control the prices of vegetables and fruits. During a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hasan Naqvi, it was decided that masha khors (middlemen) would be registered to streamline and regulate the pricing process.
The meeting, attended by Deputy Commissioner East Shehzad Fazal Abbasi, Market Committee Chairman Ali Zaman Jokhio, and Bureau of Supply officials, emphasized the crucial role of masha khors as stakeholders in price control efforts. Commissioner Naqvi stressed that involving them would make the administration and market committee’s initiatives more effective.
The Market Committee has launched an awareness campaign to facilitate the registration process. Posters and leaflets have been distributed, urging masha khors to obtain licenses immediately. It has been clarified that conducting business without a license will result in legal action, including heavy fines. Informational posters have been displayed across major points in the vegetable market, and announcements are being made through megaphones.
Additionally, the Commissioner directed that daily auction-based price lists for vegetables and fruits should be widely distributed and prominently displayed by all retailers to ensure consumer awareness. During the price review meeting, it was decided that retailers failing to display price lists would face legal action.
Meanwhile, two individuals, Sarfaraz Rehman and Zia Rehman, were arrested by Assistant Commissioner Shah Faisal for creating and distributing fake price lists. Commissioner Naqvi described these measures as essential for ensuring fair prices for the public. He remarked that this strategy would significantly contribute to the availability of vegetables and fruits at reasonable rates.
