Bellingham just tied Cristiano Ronaldo’s record as the only Real Madrid player in history to score 12 La Liga goals in their first 14 games, thanks to his strike against Real Betis. Apart from these two, no other Madrid player has accomplished this feat in the first 14 league games. Bellingham’s goal was his 16th of the year.
In terms of the match, Real Madrid wanted to defeat Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin and carry on their stellar performance. But instead, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw, which gave Girona the opportunity to take back the top spot in La Liga should they win the Catalan derby against Barcelona on Sunday.
In a hotly contested match, the home team had more opportunities in the first half. Isco and Ayoze Perez came close, but vital stops were made by Andriy Lunin, who remarkably kept his spot despite Kepa Arrizabalaga’s comeback.
The score was tied at halftime, but Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid broke the tie after 53 minutes.
Los Blancos could not hold onto their lead, though, as Betis equalized through a fantastic strike from 25 yards out by Aitor Ruibal, beating Lunin.
After a 1-1 draw with Sevilla in October, Real Madrid lost their second straight game in Seville due to the absence of any further goals. With a victory on Sunday, Girona could have taken the lead, and Barcelona could have cut the deficit to only two points.
