KARACHI – The hopes of obtaining crucial evidence from an Apple Watch and iPhone in the Mir Raza case have faded after the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) failed to unlock the deceased’s iPhone.
The investigative sources said the Punjab forensic laboratory has formally informed the investigation team in writing that it was unable to access the contents of Mir Raza’s iPhone.
The development is being viewed as a setback for investigators, who had hoped that data stored on the devices could provide important leads or evidence in the case.
The Apple Watch and mobile phone will now be returned to the investigation team, the sources said.
According to investigators, the Apple Watch yielded a few screenshots and messages, but the material was not considered significant to the ongoing investigation.
The two devices had earlier been sent to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on August 13 for forensic examination. However, the investigation team recalled the gadgets on August 15 after Mir Raza’s family expressed reservations about the NCCIA’s handling of the devices.
The investigation team subsequently sent both gadgets to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency in an effort to retrieve additional data and determine whether they contained any information relevant to the case.
The forensic agency has now formally communicated its findings to the investigation team, confirming that it could not unlock the iPhone.
