Farooq Sattar questions Sindh govt’s response to Gul Plaza tragedy – Pakistan Observer

KARACHI – Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar on Saturday criticised the Sindh government’s handling of the Gul Plaza tragedy, accusing the provincial leadership of avoiding key questions and misleading the public instead of providing clear explanations.

Farooq Sattar said there were serious concerns surrounding the incident and the official response. He questioned the timing of visits by senior officials, stating that the Sindh Chief Minister reached the site around 20 to 22 hours after the incident and should clarify the reasons for the delay.

He expressed these words while peaking at a press conference in Karachi

He also pointed out that the Mayor of Karachi arrived at the scene after approximately 23 hours and later cited his presence in Islamabad as the reason. Sattar said it was only after witnessing the reaction of affected families and residents that the authorities appeared to grasp the gravity of the situation.

The MQM-P leader urged the provincial government to address what he termed legitimate and serious questions, rather than diverting attention from the incident. He said that when concerns were raised, they were often dismissed as attempts to politicise a tragedy.

Sattar called for transparency and accountability, stressing that the public had the right to know the facts surrounding the incident and the measures being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
