St Kitts and Nevis: Denzil Douglas- Minister of Foreign Affairs of St Kitts and Nevis, extended greetings to Kim Collins for completing 20 years on winning the gold medal in the 100m World Championship
He took to Facebook and said that he turned out to be a great inspiration for the sports faculty in St Kitts and Nevis. He said, “Happy 20th Anniversary——World Champion, KIM COLLINS, 2003. 0n 25th August 2003, Kim Collins won the 100m WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; 10:07 seconds.”
On August 25th, 2003, the legendary Kim Collins secured a GOLD MEDAL for St Kitts and Nevis in the 100m at the IAAF World Championships in Paris, becoming the first Caribbean athlete to achieve this prestigious honour.
TODAY, the entire federation of St Kitts and Nevis salutes Kim Collins for this impressive achievement and the pride he brought to the nation and the Caribbean. “Let’s relive that glorious day and celebrate TWENTY YEARS of this thrilling victory,” said the sports ministry.
Kim Collins said his victory proved that small countries can produce big champions.
“It shows everybody that, look man, there are some other people in the world who can do things also,” Collins said. “You don’t have to be from a big country, a rich country, a rich family. It doesn’t really matter as long as you have some kind of talent.”
Running in lane 1, and wearing an all-black outfit and knee-length black socks, Collins surged to the front around midway through the race. He held on the rest of the way as the runners lunged for the line in a tight group.
St Kitts and Nevis have been celebrating the day as Kim Collins Day and inviting people to celebrate a sports icon who raised their flag on the world stage and brought immense pride to the nation’s name.
Kim Collins is one of the most decorated athletes. Having won the gold medal in the Paris 2003 100m, World Championship broke barriers and shaped history.
