LAHORE:

A technical committee constituted to review reforms in Christian personal laws has agreed to finalise draft legislation for proposed amendments to the Christian Marriage Act for presentation before the Punjab Assembly.

The committee also decided in a meeting to introduce an online registration system for Christian marriages.

In the meeting chaired by Minorities Affairs Minister Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, the committee reviewed proposed amendments to the act, recommendations prepared by a sub-committee and measures to bring Christian personal laws in line with current requirements.

The committee agreed that the proposed amendments would be finalised and submitted to the Punjab Assembly for legislation.

Under the proposed online registration system, the record of Christian marriages will be maintained digitally. The system is intended to improve transparency, reduce irregularities and provide better protection of the legal record relating to families.

The committee also decided to facilitate religious education and examinations for prisoners belonging to minority religions.
