Basant 2026: Lahore Kite Sales Cross Rs50 Crore in Record Time – Pakistan Observer

LAHORE – Basant frenzy is at all time high in Lahore as government lifted ban for three days after two decades. Strings and kites fly off the shelves and raked in over Rs50 crore in just three days.

From workshops across Punjab to Peshawar’s YakaToot Bazaar, artisans are working late into the night, ensuring that every kite is ready for the city’s most awaited Basant.

Lahore skies are set to come alive once again. Children sprint through narrow streets, laughing and chasing vibrant kites, while shopkeepers shout to attract eager customers in crowded markets. The provincial capital is buzzing with anticipation as the 3-day Basant festival kicks off from February 6 to 8, and kite and string sales have already soared past a staggering Rs54 crore in just the past three days.

Kite Flying Association reported a jaw-dropping figure on Tuesday alone, as over 500,000 kites sold in Lahore. Across Punjab, artisans are burning the midnight oil, meticulously crafting kites that are colorful, durable, and affordable. Peshawar’s historic YakaToot Bazaar is working overtime, dispatching thousands of kites and strings to Lahore, ensuring the festival’s skies will be ablaze with color.

For generations, Basant has been a festival of thrills, known for rooftop rivalries, cheering crowds, and the magical sight of kites dancing against the open sky. But nearly 20 years ago, the celebrations came to a sudden halt when dangerous sharp strings caused serious injuries, forcing a citywide ban.

With Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, Lahore is ready for a safe comeback. Metal and chemical-coated strings are banned, all kite makers and sellers must be registered, and authorities have introduced strict safety measures to prevent accidents. With these safeguards in place, the city is preparing for three days of sky-high excitement, colorful competition, and the triumphant return of a beloved tradition.
