KARACHI: Former President Dr. Arif Alvi emphasized the necessity for collective efforts to navigate Pakistan out of its current challenges, stressing that the release of incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan was crucial to unify the nation.

Speaking to reporters in Karachi, the PTI leader highlighted his continuous efforts to foster national unity, stating that he has consistently strived towards this goal, believing that the progress of Pakistan is intrinsically linked to unity.

Alvi reiterated that the release of PTI founder Imran Khan is pivotal in achieving national unity and emphasized the importance of respecting the public mandate as a foundational step towards unification.

Addressing allegations regarding constitutional breaches during his tenure, the former president urged his opponents to pursue legal recourse if they have complaints, even suggesting the invocation of Article 6 (treason) if necessary, affirming his adherence to the constitution and decision-making based on his knowledge and advice.

While acknowledging his limited expertise in constitutional matters, Alvi stated that he has always made decisions based on the best advice he received. He emphasized his consistent stance against corruption, considering it a core principle throughout his career.

Regarding a cipher he received, Alvi stressed the importance of upholding oaths regarding classified information handling and condemned the events of May 9, advocating for a thorough investigation into the violence. He reiterated his unwavering support for Imran Khan, affirming him as his leader.

Alvi also cautioned against sole reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for economic improvement, highlighting the necessity for collective efforts in this regard.

The press conference followed PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari’s inauguration as the 14th President of Pakistan, marking his historic second term as head of state after securing victory in the presidential election the previous day. Zardari won with 411 electoral votes, defeating his opponent, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who garnered 181 electoral votes, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan.
