National CERT issues urgent safety warning for social media creators

ISLAMABAD: Following the tragic murder of 17-year-old TikToker Sana Yusuf, Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has released a crucial safety advisory. This warning is specifically aimed at the large community of vloggers, influencers, bloggers, and TikTokers who are actively using social media platforms across the country.

The advisory strongly urges digital content creators to be extremely careful. They are told to avoid showing their current location when they go live on streams. Furthermore, it cautions against accepting friend requests from people they don’t truly know on social media. The team also advises creators to steer clear of any suspicious invitations or meetings arranged through online connections. Officials have clearly warned that revealing too much personal information online can put individuals at risk, both in the digital world and in real life.

To bolster digital defenses, the advisory provides practical steps for creators. It recommends using multi-factor authentication (2FA) for all social media accounts, which adds an extra layer of security. Users should also create strong, unique passwords and actively check that their privacy settings are fully activated. The CERT also stresses the importance of not clicking on any suspicious links that might appear.

Finally, the advisory highlights the need for quick action against misinformation. Digital creators are advised to promptly deny or correct any fake audio or video content that might involve them or spread online. This comprehensive guidance aims to empower social media personalities to protect themselves in an increasingly complex online environment.
