7 Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner book quarterfinal spots in the Indiana Wells 2024
- Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarterfnals of the Indiana Wells.
- Jannik Sinner registered his 18th consecutive win.
- Sinner is expected to win the quarterfial match.
Carlos Alcaraz secured a victory over Fabian Marozsan, avenging his loss to the Hungarian at last year’s Italian Open, and advanced to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells on Tuesday.
In the meantime, Jannik Sinner achieved his 18th consecutive win as he progressed to the quarter-finals with a straight-sets triumph over Ben Shelton.
Alcaraz maintained dominance against Marozsan as he continues his title defense in the California desert with a 6-3 6-3 victory.
The Spanish player clinched the win with a crosscourt forehand on match point and exclaimed “Vamos” following the final shot of the match.
Marozsan had previously upset Alcaraz in straight sets in Rome last May as a qualifier.
“Honestly I was nervous before the match, I’m not going to lie,” Alcaraz admitted.
“Playing against someone who beat you easily — I remember I had no chances in the match in Rome. It was difficult for me today to approach the match, but I’m really happy with the way that I did.
“I started pretty well, playing my style since the beginning. Today I knew what I had to do better than I did in Rome.”
Alcaraz hasn’t lost a set at the tournament since dropping the first set in the initial match he played. The result marked his 50th match win at a Masters 1000 event.
The two-time Grand Slam champion could potentially face Australian Open champion Sinner in the semi-finals, but first, he will have to overcome Alexander Zverev.
The German sixth seed defeated Alex de Minaur with his relentless power to secure a 5-7 6-2 6-3 victory.
Sinner and American Shelton had a close first set, but the former was at ease in the second, securing a 7-6(4) 6-1 win to maintain his flawless record in 2024.
“I just tried to stay positive,” Sinner stated.
“There were tough moments, especially in the first set, and I’m really happy that I won that and started really positive in the second set, which gave me a lot of confidence.”
Third seed Sinner is expected to win the match when he faces off against Jiri Lehecka in the quarters.
Lehecka, the 32nd seed, followed his upset win over fifth seed Andrey Rublev with another over 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in a convincing 6-2 6-4 win, qualifying for his first-ever quarter-final at a Masters 1000 event.
The 22-year-old Czech player hit 25 winners against the Greek player and has not lost serve in his last two matches.
