KARACHI – Renowned politician and former National Assembly Speaker Elahi Bakhsh Soomro on Thursday passed away in Karachi due to a cardiac arrest.
The senior statesman was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. Elahi Bakhsh Soomro, hailing from the influential Soomro family in Shikarpur, had a longstanding political career, contributing significantly to the governance of Sindh.
Elahi Bakhsh Soomro served as the federal minister during General Zia-ul-Haq’s government and later joined the Pakistan Muslim League -Quaid during Pervez Musharraf’s era. He held the esteemed position of the Speaker of the National Assembly.
In 1985, he was elected as a member of the National Assembly in uncontested elections. Despite his notable contributions, he faced electoral defeat in the 2007 elections.
The political and social figures expressed sorrow over his demise.
