ISLAMABAD – The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges has summoned Metropolitan Corporation Lahore’s Metropolitan Officer (Regulation), Jawad-ul-Hassan, to appear in person on September 1 after he failed to attend an earlier committee proceeding despite being served a notice.
The summons were issued on the direction of committee chairman Afzal Khokhar. The National Assembly Secretariat has instructed Jawad-ul-Hassan to appear before the committee at 2pm in the Constitution Room of Parliament House, Islamabad.
The officer had been required to attend the committee’s August 12 meeting but did not appear despite receiving an official notice.
Taking note of his absence, the committee ordered that he be summoned again and directed him to personally attend the upcoming proceedings.
The National Assembly Secretariat issued the summons under Rule 227(3) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007.
The notice warned that failure to comply could prompt the committee to exercise its powers under the relevant parliamentary rules. These include powers similar to those of a civil court to secure attendance and require the production of documents.
The Chief Secretary Punjab has been asked to ensure that the summons are properly served and that the officer appears before the committee as directed.
The Punjab Inspector General of Police has also been requested to provide necessary assistance in enforcing the summons and take lawful measures, where required, to secure the officer’s attendance.
Meanwhile, the Chief Officer of Metropolitan Corporation Lahore has been directed to ensure that Jawad-ul-Hassan receives the summons and appears before the committee personally.
