QUETTA: The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has written to the Sindh government, urging it to ensure the immediate release of Balochistan’s allocated water share after the province reported a severe shortage during the ongoing Kharif 2026 season.
According to an official letter issued by IRSA Secretary Muhammad Khalid Idrees Rana on June 29, Balochistan has been facing an acute shortage of irrigation water since the start of the Kharif season despite IRSA releasing the province’s full allocated share, including conveyance losses.
The letter states that the water earmarked for Balochistan is allegedly not being released onward by the Sindh Irrigation Department, resulting in shortages across the province’s canal system.
The development follows efforts by Balochistan Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Irrigation Mir Muhammad Sadiq Umrani, who raised the issue with IRSA. The authority also referred to a telephone conversation held with the provincial minister on June 29 regarding the matter.
IRSA warned that any further delay in releasing Balochistan’s water share could trigger protests by farmers in command areas, raising concerns over a possible deterioration in the law and order situation.
The authority has urged the Sindh government to intervene immediately and ensure that Balochistan receives its constitutionally allocated share of water to address farmers’ grievances and prevent further disruption to agricultural activities.
The statement was issued by the Office of the Provincial Minister for Irrigation, Government of Balochistan.
