Pak–Afghan border tensions: Security on high alert in Lahore – Pakistan Observer

Security across Lahore and the entire province has been placed on high alert following a terror threat linked to Fitna al-Khawarij and rising border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Special security arrangements were put in place in connection with Friday prayers. Authorities have directed heightened vigilance around mosques, Imambargahs, and other places of worship across the city. A heavy deployment of police personnel has been ensured at major congregational mosques, particularly those expected to witness large gatherings. Strict security measures were enforced, particularly around important government buildings, sensitive installations, and law enforcement agencies. According to official sources, security in Lahore and across the province was already on high alert after authorities issued a threat warning regarding a potential sabotage attempt by a militant associated with Fitna al-Khawarij in the provincial capital. However, the measures have been further intensified following recent tensions along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border, prompting authorities to adopt extraordinary precautionary steps to ensure public safety. Security has been significantly increased around sensitive locations, including police offices and other law enforcement agencies throughout the province. Major roads passing directly in front of key law enforcement buildings have been closed to general traffic, with alternative routes designated to minimize inconvenience to commuters. Comprehensive searches of all visitors entering these buildings are being conducted, and complete records are being maintained to prevent any unauthorized access.

In view of heightened security concerns, monitoring activities around law enforcement offices and key installations have been enhanced through increased patrolling and surveillance. Security at important government buildings has also been tightened, with additional personnel deployed and access control measures strictly implemented. Police teams, including Elite Force units and Quick Response Teams, have been stationed at sensitive religious sites to respond swiftly to any emergency. Walk-through gates and metal detectors have been installed at selected mosques and Imambargahs, while volunteers and mosque administrations are cooperating closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough screening of worshippers. Sniffer dogs and bomb disposal squads have also been kept on standby in certain high-risk areas as an added precaution. To deal with any untoward incident, security at the city’s entry and exit points has been further strengthened. Strict checking at pickets and checkpoints is ongoing, and suspicious vehicles are being thoroughly searched.

Authorities are also documenting vehicle details to maintain a comprehensive record as part of preventive measures.

Senior police officials have stated that these measures are purely precautionary and aimed at safeguarding citizens. They have urged the public to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel, and promptly report any suspicious activity to the authorities. The overall security environment in Lahore remains under close monitoring, with law enforcement agencies maintaining a state of readiness to counter any potential threat and ensure peace and stability in the provincial capital and beyond.
