Relief for Karachi Drivers as Traffic Police Crack Down Only on Properly Marked Roads! – Pakistan Observer

ISLAMABAD – Traffic Police in country’s largest city told Sindh High Court (SHC) that e-challans will only be issued on roads that are fully equipped with signage, lane markings, and proper infrastructure.

Roads still under construction will temporarily escape fines until upgrades are complete, offering some relief for frustrated drivers. The police revealed a range of driver-friendly measures. Motorists can now enjoy a 50% discount if e-challans are paid within 14 days. To improve transparency and efficiency, new traffic courts are being established to handle cases more quickly and fairly.

The e-challan system, powered by AI, is under scrutiny as petitioners claim it may have been rolled out without proper preparation, including verification mechanisms and infrastructure readiness. The SHC has adjourned the case to March 12, 2026, leaving drivers waiting for the next twist.

For now, enforcement will remain focused on clearly marked, signposted corridors, while chaotic, under-construction roads remain exempt. Drivers, however, should still expect heavy scrutiny at key intersections and monitored routes, as Karachi’s e-ticketing system has already processed a massive volume of violations since launch. Officials insist the system is not being suspended, this is a “signage-first” enforcement approach, with major updates expected after the SHC hearing.
