KARACHI – The death toll from a gas explosion in a residential building in Soldier Bazaar area of Karachi has risen to ten, with authorities continuing search and rescue operations.
Reports said a gas leak caused an explosion in a three-story building. Parts of the structure collapsed as a result of the blast.
Police said the area has been cordoned off, and security has been tightened. Rescue teams have launched a search operation at the site. Officials revealed that each floor of the building contained a single room, and the narrow streets in the vicinity have made the rescue efforts particularly challenging.
Rescue officials reported that seven bodies have been recovered so far, including that of a 10-year-old girl identified as Nazia. More than ten people were injured in the blast and have been transported to nearby hospitals for medical care.
A rescue official told media that the explosion took place on the first floor of the building. It is believed that the blast was triggered by a gas cylinder or a gas extraction machine.
He said ten bodies have been retrieved, there are concerns that more individuals may be trapped under the rubble.
The rescue operation continues, with specialized equipment being used to remove debris from the site, including cutting through metal structures.
