HEC announces Law Graduate Assessment Test [Law-GAT] 2026 for aspiring advocates – Pakistan Observer

ISLAMABAD – The Higher Education Commission (HEC), through its Education Testing Council (ETC), has announced the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) 2026, a mandatory exam for law graduates who wish to enroll as advocates in Pakistan.

The graduates holding an LLB or an equivalent degree from a university recognized by HEC or the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), whether local or international are eligible to apply.

Online registration will begin on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 2:00pm while the test is scheduled for Sunday, April 5, 2026. Any revisions to the schedule will be updated on the official HEC website.

The exam will consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with candidates required to score at least 50 out of 100 to pass. The syllabus and test format are available for download from the HEC portal.

TC conducts the Law-GAT quarterly across major cities in Pakistan, allowing candidates to select their preferred test center. However, centers with fewer than 250 registrants may be reassigned at ETC’s discretion.

Individuals who have already passed the Law-GAT, those who have used all seven allowed attempts, and students still enrolled in a bachelor’s law program are not eligible to apply.

HEC made it clear that while passing the Law-GAT is essential, the candidates must also meet all additional requirements set by the Pakistan Bar Council to gain the right to practice law.

Simply clearing the exam does not automatically allow enrollment as an advocate.

The last date for online registration is March 3, 2026.

The candidates and applicants can consult the ETC helplines or visit the HEC official website to get relevant information in this regard.
