Three judges take oath as FCC members in first phase of court’s formation – Pakistan Observer

ISLAMABAD – Three judges of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) have taken oath in the first phase of the court’s formation. Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Baqi Najafi, and Justice Amir Farooq administered their oaths today.

The oath was administered by the court’s first Chief Justice, Justice Aminuddin Khan. Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Sarfraz Dogar, was also present at the ceremony.

Earlier, the Ministry of Law had issued the official notification regarding the appointment of the FCC judges.

According to the notification, the Federal Constitutional Court will comprise six judges: Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Amir Farooq, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, Justice KK Agha and Justice Rozi Khan from Balochistan.

Justice Arshad Hussain Shah from the Peshawar High Court will also serve as a judge of the Federal Constitutional Court, as per the notification.

The reports emerged earlier that Federal Constitutional Court is likely to expand to 13 judges.

First Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan will sit in Room No. 1 at the Islamabad High Court while Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Sarfraz Dogar, will shift to Court Room No. 2, according to officials.

Earlier in the day, Justice Aminuddin Khan was sworn in as the first chief justice of the newly established Federal Constitutional Court (FCC).

President Asif Ali Zardari administered oath to the Justice Khan during a ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir, the heads of the Pakistan Air Force and Navy, and several other senior officials.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gillani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and cabinet minister also attended the event.

The event will be followed by Justice Aminuddin Khan administering the oath to the newly appointed judges of the Federal Constitutional Court.

A day earlier, Justice Aminuddin was named as first-ever Chief Justice of Federal Constitutional Court. President of Pakistan approved the historic appointment on the advice of the Prime Minister, days before Justice Khan’s scheduled retirement.

Khan served as the head of the Constitutional Bench, cementing his authority and expertise in some of the country’s most sensitive and high-profile legal matters.
